Behaviour Management Service

The SFS Behaviour Management Service is an essential element of our needs-based service for children and young people. Experienced specialist practitioners offer assessment, advice and above all practical strategies for understanding and responding to all types of behaviour.

They work closely alongside our SFS supervising social workers and the local authority to enhance the team around the child and enable the outcomes of the care plan to be achieved successfully.

The service is available pre-placement and at any time subsequently, should issues arise, and fully involves the carers, social workers and other professionals from health and education. As a result, there is in place a network of support surrounding each placement with an agreed strategy for handling the child’s behaviour where everyone has their own role and with accessible real-world advice for the carers.

We have a number of therapeutic approaches available. Our research and experience over 15 years identified that behaviour management approaches, grounded in attachment theory, were the most effective intervention and support strategy for many families. Carers not only felt listened to, they were also given fresh tools with which to deal with the challenges. They want to be able to do something, to try something different.

Each and every package is different as it is tailored towards the needs of the individual child or young person. The options include:

  1. direct work with the whole family – child and foster carers
  2. direct work with one or both carers
  3. direct work with the child
  4. consultancy for staff
  5. working on behaviour management strategies for children and young people.
  6. small group training/workshops with carers dealing with similar issues.

Everything revolves around the needs of the child or young person. It could be, for example, that one element is sufficient but for other families, it is perfectly possible that the child will be part of therapy, the carers have sessions about behaviour management and/or the carers are part of a group of carers facing similar situations, and that our specialists are working with the network to ensure a holistic, consistent approach.
